“Summer Chess”

Description:

Chess Camp with Coach Josh Leonard. Camp will be based on hands-on chess activities designed to teach how to use the pieces and tools of the game. New players are welcome from all grades, especially in Week One.

Activities include learning all the piece movements. Strategies and tactics of the game. Learning the squares and notation.

Friendly competitions, cooperation and practice situations will be used for each of these topics and activities.

Weeks Offered: Weeks One – Three

Weekly Topics

• Week One: PAWN POWER: Endgame and Opening practice including: Passed Pawns, Weak pawns, Backwards pawns, Pawn Chains, Pawn levers and Queening Pawns

• Week Two: MATING ATTACKS: Stepladder mate, K & Q mate, Other Mating attacks (K +R and 2Bs), Solving Mating Puzzles

• Week Three OPENINGS: Classical and Hypermodern: Opening practice with standard piece development (1.e4 e5) & Hypermodern Openings on the wings:

(Each Week may draw elements from the others. New players are encouraged to attend the first session where possible)

The PM Programmes for ages 5 – 9 run weekly, 12.30 – 3.30pm, and enrolment for this or any other PM programme only is possible. The AM Programme (French, German, Russian and Spanish) is proceeding as previously announced; Extended Care is also available.
